Germany's double Olympic biathlon champion Laura Dahlmeier has been seriously injured in a mountaineering accident in Pakistan's Karakorum mountains.
The 31-year-old was caught in a rockfall on Monday at an altitude of about 5,700 metres. Bad weather and the remote location delayed rescue efforts, with a helicopter only reaching the site on Tuesday morning.
Faizullah Faraq, a spokesperson for the provincial government, confirmed the ongoing rescue operation, which is supported by the Pakistan army.
Dahlmeier's management told German broadcaster ZDF that she was climbing with a partner when the accident occurred around noon local time on July 28. Her partner immediately contacted emergency services to begin the rescue.
Dahlmeier is a celebrated biathlete who represented Germany at two Winter Olympics, securing two gold medals and one bronze in Pyeongchang 2018. She was the first woman to win both the sprint and pursuit events at the same Games. Across five World Championships, she earned 15 medals, including seven golds, before retiring in May 2019 at age 25.
