King Charles III Investigates England's Most Intriguing Historical Mystery
King Charles III embarks on a quest to uncover the truth behind the disappearance of two royal heirs from over five centuries ago.
King Charles III has launched an investigation into a centuries-old royal mystery.
Despite mixed public opinions about King Charles III, formerly Prince Charles, his fascination with history and archaeology remains unwavering. While British tabloids frequently scrutinize his every move and statement, the king recently made headlines by initiating a new inquiry into one of England’s most enduring historical enigmas.
Charles is deeply passionate about archaeology and has often participated in excavations across England, hoping to uncover significant artifacts tied to his nation's past. His primary interest lies in relics connected to his own family lineage. Recently, he ordered the reopening of the investigation into the fate of Edward V and his younger brother Richard.
The two boys, aged 12 and 9, were declared illegitimate heirs by Richard, Duke of Gloucester, a key figure in 15th-century English politics. Believed to be obstacles to his ascent to power, the brothers were reportedly imprisoned in the Tower of London, where they mysteriously disappeared. The last confirmed sighting of the boys was in the summer of 1483, playing within the Tower grounds.
This theory gained widespread attention thanks to William Shakespeare’s portrayal of Richard III, though some historians argue the alleged murder was Tudor-era propaganda aimed at tarnishing Richard’s legacy. Due to a lack of concrete evidence or DNA analysis, the boys’ disappearance has remained an unsolved historical puzzle.

Since the boys’ remains are interred in royal crypts, any forensic examination requires royal approval. According to Tracy Borman, chief curator of Historic Royal Palaces, the late Queen Elizabeth II had strictly forbidden any investigations to avoid disturbing the resting souls. However, King Charles III holds a different view and actively supports DNA testing.
Speaking at a literary festival in Staffordshire, Borman shared, "The King expressed his desire to conduct this investigation to finally uncover the truth about how the rightful heirs of the royal family met their end."

While King Charles’s intentions appear noble, many in the UK view this move skeptically, seeing it as another example of royal overreach. Rumors suggest that even before ascending the throne, Charles sought permission from his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II, for DNA testing but was repeatedly denied.
The king’s true motivations remain unclear—is he driven by a genuine quest for justice or a desire to secure his own legacy by challenging his mother’s wishes?
"He would be better off addressing pressing issues like the refugee crisis," critics lament on social media.
