Jack Grealish’s form leaves England boss Thomas Tuchel with a ‘headache’

After being omitted from the England squad, Jack Grealish’s performances at Everton are putting pressure on manager Thomas Tuchel ahead of the World Cup.

Everton stunned Crystal Palace with a last-gasp winner and briefly updated their X bio to read “Grealish for England” after the win.

It has been nearly a year since Jack Grealish last wore a Three Lions shirt, with his only appearance coming in a 3-1 Nations League win over Finland under Lee Carsley. Excluded from Thomas Tuchel’s latest squad for fixtures against Wales and Latvia, the 30-year-old is determined to force his way back into the manager’s plans for the World Cup.

After supplying four assists in his first six Premier League outings for Everton, Grealish scored a 93rd-minute winner at Goodison Park, timed at 92:21—the club’s latest home winner since March 2022.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Grealish said, “In the 85th minute I kept telling myself to go and score. I tried it before against Villa and West Ham without luck. This time I did it and ran to my parents—that moment meant a lot.”

Not playing for England isn’t “deep”

Grealish has started six consecutive league matches for the first time in over two years. He misses the upcoming match with parent club Manchester City and has 249 days to make an impression before the World Cup. On INLIBER Radio 5 Live, he downplayed his omission: “You want to play for your country, but others have done well in my position. I respect the manager’s choice and am focused on repaying the faith Everton showed in me.”

Wayne Rooney, speaking to INLIBER Sport, believes Grealish’s form “will be giving the England manager a headache”: “If he keeps producing like this, he’ll be in contention next summer. His talent speaks for itself.”

Johnny-on-the-spot

Tuchel insists the door is open: “Jack knows how influential he is and is on his way to becoming the best version of himself.” In seven league games for Everton, the midfielder has contributed five goal involvements, created 17 chances, and taken 10 shots in 556 minutes.

Manager David Moyes praised him as “Johnny-on-the-spot”, adding that a minor injury cost him some training time but did not stop him from making an impact.

Grealish’s late winner and consistent creativity at Everton are forcing England’s manager to reconsider his omission ahead of the World Cup.
