How to Influence Apple Music Recommendations

It's been six weeks since I started actively engaging with Apple Music by listening, liking, and disliking songs. Initially, it felt like these actions had little impact—the recommendations remained largely unchanged. However, I believe our interactions do influence the algorithm to some extent. Here, we share practical tips on how to improve your Apple Music recommendations.

Users have two primary ways to shape their recommendations: liking songs and disliking suggestions. The like feature is easily recognizable by the heart icon displayed on every track, even on the lock screen.

Disliking content is a bit more nuanced. This option is available only in the "For You" tab. If you come across an album or playlist that doesn't suit your taste, press and hold on it, then select "I Don’t Like This Suggestion"—an option that Apple has yet to localize in some languages.

Interestingly, these adjustments don't always immediately reflect in the music suggested. Despite removing albums by bands like Pantera and AC/DC from my "For You" tab, their music continues to appear. Hopefully, with upcoming updates to iOS, Apple will enhance the recommendation algorithms. Currently, Spotify's mathematical models tend to deliver more accurate personalized suggestions compared to Apple Music's curators.
