Gabriel injury: Arsenal defender out for weeks with thigh injury

Arsenal defender Gabriel will miss weeks with a thigh injury sustained on international duty with Brazil, according to Mikel Arteta.

The centre-back pulled up in Brazil's friendly with Senegal at Emirates last weekend and was ruled out of the subsequent draw with Tunisia. He has started all 11 Premier League matches this season as Arsenal sit four points clear at the top.

Arteta said Gabriel will be out for weeks and will have another scan next Wednesday to clarify the timeframe.

Piero Hincapie and Cristhian Mosquera are in contention to fill in when Arsenal host Tottenham on Sunday (16:30 GMT).

“Gabi is going to be out for weeks,” Arteta said, adding the absence is a blow because Gabriel is a defensive leader, but the squad must adapt and colleagues must step up.

Gabriel, bought for £23.1m from Lille in 2020, has started every league game this season.

Defender Riccardo Califiori is a doubt for the north London derby after returning from Italy with a hip problem and has yet to train in London. Arteta said he will be assessed daily to determine fitness.

Viktor Gyokeres remains unavailable with a hamstring issue.
