Director Vasily Barkhatov, known for his work on "From Scratch," has embarked on bringing Viktor Pelevin’s novel "Transhumanism Inc." to the screen. In an exclusive interview with KinoPoisk, Barkhatov shared insights into the challenges and creative choices involved in adapting this complex narrative.
Despite the richness of the source material, Barkhatov and co-writer Anna Borisova have introduced an original storyline not found in the novel. This new arc reveals the backstory of the corporation’s founders, shedding light on their journey from their first encounter to the tense partnership disputes unfolding within their preserved brains. Barkhatov mentioned that Pelevin, often referred to as a “literary Banksy,” has indirectly endorsed their approach through his agent, and they hope the author receives all shared materials.
The series will span six episodes, each adapting a different novella from the book. Interwoven throughout is the continuous narrative of Roman and Anton—the visionary programmer and the pioneering medic who devised the method to preserve minds in specialized containers. Their evolving relationship threads through every episode, offering a compelling human dimension to the futuristic setting.
“One was a serious IT programmer, the other a medic who invented how to store brains in jars. We tell their story from their initial meeting to the final partner conflicts that unfold within these brain containers. This storyline connects all six episodes,” Barkhatov explained.
Originally published in 2021, "Transhumanism Inc." is a collection of interconnected stories set in a universe where affluent and powerful individuals, having lost their physical bodies, preserve their brains in special containers and continue to exist within a digital simulation. The series promises to bring this visionary future vividly to life for a new audience.
