Evacuation of Gaza City Deemed Unavoidable, Israeli Army Warns Palestinians

The Israeli military says families moving to southern Gaza will receive substantial aid as forces advance into Gaza City, raising humanitarian concerns.

The Israeli military has stated that the evacuation of Gaza City is unavoidable as its forces prepare to capture the area.

In an X post, Arabic spokesman Avichay Adraee assured that families relocating south would receive "the most generous humanitarian aid."

Witnesses report Israeli tanks advanced overnight into Gaza City’s northern outskirts, prompting thousands more residents to flee. Many have already moved within the city, where some one million Palestinians remain.

International and Humanitarian Concerns

Plans to occupy the entire Gaza Strip, including Gaza City - described by Israel as Hamas’s last stronghold - were announced in early August. The UN and NGOs have warned that an offensive could have a "horrific humanitarian impact."

On Tuesday, tanks entered the Ibad al-Rahman district, destroying homes. Witness Saad Abed described hearing explosions and seeing people escaping towards his neighborhood in Jala Street, about 1 km away.

Later, the tanks reportedly withdrew to Jabalia, where they have continued operations. Bombardment also persisted in Shejaiya, Zeitoun and Sabra districts. The military stated its troops engaged combat in Jabalia and Gaza City’s outskirts, neutralizing a "terrorist cell" and seizing a weapons cache.

Political Pressure and Post-War Planning

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to conquer all of Gaza after indirect ceasefire and hostage-release talks with Hamas collapsed. He faces international and domestic pressure; tens of thousands protested in Tel Aviv demanding a ceasefire to secure the return of remaining hostages, of whom only 20 are believed alive.

In Washington, US special envoy Steve Witkoff said the White House is drafting "a very comprehensive plan" for post-war Gaza, to be discussed at a White House meeting chaired by President Trump. He predicted the conflict would end "one way or another, certainly before the end of this year."

Since the Hamas attack on 7 October 2023, which killed about 1,200 people and took 251 hostages, Israel has launched a campaign in Gaza. According to the Hamas-run health ministry, nearly 62,900 people have died. Over 90% of homes are damaged or destroyed, essential services have collapsed and famine has been confirmed in Gaza City.

The Israeli advance into Gaza City has triggered mass displacement and raised urgent humanitarian alarms as military operations intensify.
