The Psychology Department at Harvard University has launched a cutting-edge lab dedicated to studying how we perceive music. They have created four interactive quizzes available on computers and laptops, allowing everyone to evaluate their musical ear.
The first quiz assesses your ability to perceive pitch. You will hear three identical tones, followed by a change in pitch. Your task is to quickly determine whether the pitch has gone higher or lower. While most sounds are easy to distinguish, some are nearly identical, adding a fun challenge.
Another quiz tests your knowledge of global music traditions. Listen to several songs and identify their purpose from four options: dancing, healing, expressing love, or lullabies.
In a unique test, you’ll need to identify who the listener is based on the audio. Most questions feature English-language lullabies, but some include regular monologues that might also be directed at children.
The most advanced quiz, the synthesizer test, requires you to listen to a modified folk song and determine its usage. Afterwards, you can compare the altered version with the original to deepen your understanding.
