The scientists studied DNA methylation patterns in both dogs and humans as they age. Their analysis included blood samples from 320 people aged between 1 and 103 years, alongside 104 Labrador Retrievers. By comparing key physiological development markers, they discovered a nonlinear relationship between dog and human aging. Mathematically, this relationship is expressed as:
human age = ln(dog age) × 16 + 31
Here, 'ln' stands for the natural logarithm, which can be calculated using an engineering calculator mode found in devices like the iPhone calculator or simply by searching "natural logarithm (number)" on Google for an immediate result.
According to this formula, a 7-week-old puppy corresponds to a 9-month-old human baby. Since dogs reach puberty and sexual maturity much faster, the formula reflects this accelerated development: a one-year-old dog equates to a 31-year-old human!
This formula is based on an average dog lifespan of 16 years, so it may not perfectly apply to all breeds. Nonetheless, it offers a much more accurate estimation than the traditional "multiply by seven" method.
