Thai cuisine is an extraordinary adventure for your taste buds, and once you arrive in Thailand, you'll quickly realize you can't go a day without savoring its unique flavors! This guide will help you understand what to eat, how much it costs, and where to find the best authentic meals.

Signature Thai Dishes
Thai cuisine stands out as one of the most flavorful and inventive culinary traditions worldwide. For me, it rivals even Italian cuisine with its quick preparation, bold spices, and freshest ingredients. Most dishes are cooked in a wok, ensuring meals are ready within 10–15 minutes.
The foundation of Thai meals includes rice or rice noodles, vegetables, and most importantly, a variety of pastes and sauces that give each dish its unmistakable Thai character. Here are some favorites to try:
- Fish & Seafood – From squid and oysters to clams, the seafood options are abundant and fresh. Choose your favorite and enjoy it grilled, steamed, or stir-fried.

Dining Costs and Where to Eat
In restaurants, prices are very reasonable: a whole grilled fish for two starts at about $7.50, oysters range between $1.20 and $1.80 each, a plate of mussels costs around $3, and fried squid with vegetables is about $2.40.
However, the best way to experience authentic Thai flavors is to dine where the locals do—at humble street stalls and small eateries. These places often have simple plastic or wooden tables under a canopy, with an open kitchen where you can watch your meal being prepared. The menus are brief, usually printed on a single sheet, featuring around 10 dishes. Despite their modest appearance, these venues serve the most genuine and mouthwatering Thai food.

Street vendors and markets are a world of their own, especially the lively evening markets that come alive at sunset. Here, you can indulge in chicken and pork skewers for just $0.30 each, grilled stuffed squid for $0.60, fried fish for $1.30, shrimp tempura with sweet and sour sauce for $1.60 per six pieces, fried spring rolls for $0.30 each, and a variety of sweet treats made from rice, coconut, peas, and fried onions for $0.30 per piece.

Fresh Tropical Fruits
While not dishes per se, fresh fruits are an essential part of the Thai culinary experience. Mango, the king of Thai fruits, costs about $0.90 per kilogram in season and up to $2.60 off-season. Papaya is $1 per kilogram. Bananas are sold in bunches—about $0.60 per bunch of 15 baby bananas—with at least four varieties available. Other popular fruits include dragon fruit, guava, watermelon (around $1.60 per kilogram), and coconuts—the island’s favorite drink—available for $0.60 at markets and up to $1.50 in restaurants. Exotic options like rambutan, lychee, mangosteen, mandarins, and durian, the famously pungent fruit, are also widely enjoyed.

Thai food offers an endless journey of flavors and sensations. For those who fall in love with it (and it’s hard not to), trying your hand at cooking Thai dishes at home can be rewarding. If formal cooking classes seem pricey, especially on islands like Koh Samui, my advice is to visit markets frequently and observe how the locals prepare these meals swiftly and skillfully. Don’t be discouraged if your first attempts at making pad Thai don’t turn out perfect—the first try is always a learning experience!
ขอให้เจริญอาหาร! (Enjoy your meal!)
Note: The prices mentioned are approximate and based on costs in Koh Samui. Prices may vary in other parts of Thailand, such as higher in Phuket or lower in Chiang Mai.
