Recent research from Iowa State University in the USA reveals that light jogging or cycling can significantly amplify the effects of therapy for individuals battling depression.

Importantly, the study highlights that even a single session of exercise right before a therapy appointment can make a difference, without requiring ongoing physical training.

In the initial study, 30 adults diagnosed with major depressive disorders participated. Some engaged in a 30-minute moderate-intensity cycling session, while others remained seated during the same period. After one week, the groups switched roles.

Participants completed surveys before, during, and after each session, as well as at intervals of 25, 50, and 75 minutes post-exercise. These assessments measured depression symptoms and cognitive function.

The findings showed mood improvements during the 30-minute exercise and lasting up to 75 minutes afterward. Participants also experienced enhanced enjoyment in typically pleasurable activities, maintaining better effects than the non-exercising control group even after 75 minutes.

To delve deeper, researchers conducted a pilot study with 10 participants over eight weeks. Half performed 30-minute moderate workouts before weekly one-hour cognitive-behavioral therapy sessions, while the other half continued their usual routines.

Both groups improved, but those who exercised showed notably greater progress. They reported quicker and stronger connections with their therapists, likely increasing therapy benefits and adherence.

Scientists conclude that a brief workout before therapy primes the brain for emotionally challenging work, boosting therapy outcomes and supporting mental health recovery.
