Discover How CrossFit Transcends Fitness to Build a Global Community
Explore the transformative culture of CrossFit that unites people worldwide through high-intensity functional training and inspiring competitions.
This year, I had the incredible opportunity to witness CrossFit in its birthplace, revealing new dimensions of this dynamic sport. I’m excited to share my insights on how high-intensity functional workouts have evolved into a powerful culture that connects and transforms lives.
Attending the final stage of the Reebok CrossFit Games—a global competition where athletes qualify through an intense online tournament and regional contests—was a dream come true. The world’s top competitors gather in Carson, California, battling under the scorching sun for the title of the fittest person on earth. Witnessing CrossFit at its source opened my eyes to its deeper impact.
Training for the Unknown
CrossFit’s core philosophy, as articulated by founder Greg Glassman, is to prepare individuals for the unknown and unpredictable. Dave Castro, the program director, designs challenges that athletes have never encountered before, pushing them beyond their limits.
For example, athletes accustomed to lifting weights and pull-ups were once challenged to ride fixed-gear bikes up steep hills. Another year, they swam in open ocean waters before performing kettlebell exercises on sand—a stark contrast to the cushioned gym floors they’re used to.
This year featured the Pegboard challenge, a climbing wall with holes where athletes insert and remove wooden pegs—a test blending rock climbing and 'American Ninja Warrior' style agility. Few men and even fewer women completed it, showcasing the universal athleticism CrossFit demands.
Intense Competition and Endurance
The unknown isn’t the only challenge. The punishing heat combined with weighted vests made the grueling 'Murph' workout a heroic feat. Imagine running a mile, doing 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 squats, and running another mile—all under the blazing sun with a heavy vest. Even elite athletes like Annie Thorisdottir faced heart issues, and others had to withdraw.
The Games saw a high rate of injuries this year, reflecting the intense pursuit of records and speed. Despite this, athletes express gratitude and determination to return stronger next year.
Interestingly, the toughest workouts bear the names of American war heroes, while foundational workouts are named after hurricanes or female traits. This year, an Icelandic athlete, Björgvin Karl Guðmundsson, won a workout named after an American hero.
The Thrilling Atmosphere
Standing amidst roaring crowds felt like watching a blend of gladiator battles and the Olympics. The variety of exercises and skill levels means early leaders don’t always finish first.
Fans from all over the world gather, all fit, tanned, and proudly wearing their gym’s apparel, creating an electric atmosphere.
The expo area was a playground of fitness challenges—from burpees for bandanas to bike tests and kettlebell stations. Trying everything myself, I got a solid workout and met fascinating people, including my favorite athlete and entrepreneur Jason Khalipa.
CrossFit as a Business Ecosystem
Known for entrepreneurial spirit, America has fostered numerous businesses around CrossFit. At the expo, I saw everything from gym-owner training programs promising to double memberships to $5 finger guards protecting thumbs during lifts.
Energy drinks, customizable jump ropes, supportive belts, and even rubber wedding bands designed for workouts highlight how CrossFit fuels innovation. New equipment like the Assault Bikes—air-resistance stationary bikes that intensify with effort—may soon become standard in gyms worldwide.
Inclusivity and Adaptive Training
CrossFit embraces athletes with disabilities, offering modified exercises suitable for all ages and abilities. This inclusive approach creates a supportive community where everyone trains side by side, finds encouragement, and achieves remarkable progress.
Special competitive workouts for adaptive athletes were featured during the Games, showcasing their incredible determination.
Redefining Female Strength and Beauty
After sharing footage of women running in weighted vests, I noticed many comments discussing the unique beauty of CrossFit athletes. This reflects how CrossFit reshapes perceptions of beauty—not based on superficial standards but on authentic strength and resilience.
Professional female athletes don’t rely on tanning sprays, hair extensions, or cosmetic enhancements. Their beauty shines through their performance—lifting heavy weights, executing multiple pull-ups, and overcoming obstacles with grace. To me, this genuine athletic beauty is far more inspiring than traditional fitness poses.
For women not pursuing professional CrossFit, there’s no need to worry about becoming overly muscular. Instead, they gain new skills and a fresh appreciation for physical harmony. This applies to men as well.
Influence on Fashion and Style
Originating in sunny California—the home of surfing and skateboarding—CrossFit quickly absorbed fashion trends from these cultures. Over five years of collaboration with Reebok, CrossFit apparel evolved dramatically, incorporating features like stretch zones, laser ventilation, flat seams, and Kevlar patches to withstand barbell contact.
At the 2015 Reebok CrossFit Games, athletes wore cutting-edge gear designed to endure intense workouts. Designers tested prototypes by having athletes perform rope climbs until the shoes wore out, then innovated to improve durability.
Developed by CrossFitters themselves, the Nano 4.0 shoes featured robust rubber mesh, and the latest models include Kevlar coverings, making them virtually indestructible.
These shoes look stylish enough to wear with jeans, symbolizing membership in the CrossFit community.
Back in my home country, a French woman approached me in a coffee shop asking about local CrossFit gyms. I recommended NA CrossFit, and she mentioned her own gym in Paris, CrossFit Louvre. I look forward to visiting it someday.
Today, CrossFit in the West is much more than fitness; it’s a comprehensive culture encompassing physical and mental training, thriving businesses, spectacular competitions, inclusive opportunities for all, healthy nutrition principles, and fashion trends.
In Eastern Europe and former Soviet countries, CrossFit is rapidly growing. If you’re seeking a new, beneficial (though sometimes extreme) fitness experience, find a nearby CrossFit gym and a qualified coach. It’s possible that in 5 to 10 years, we’ll see athletes from this region competing at the CrossFit Games in California.
