David Lammy Admits Fishing Without Licence During Visit with US Vice President
Foreign Secretary David Lammy has acknowledged an administrative oversight after angling unlicensed with US Vice President JD Vance at Chevening House and has now purchased the required licence.
Foreign Secretary David Lammy has admitted going fishing without a rod licence during a meeting with US Vice President JD Vance at Chevening House in Kent.
Lammy informed the Environment Agency of the oversight and has now purchased the required licence. In England and Wales, anyone aged 13 or over must hold a rod fishing licence to catch freshwater species or face prosecution.
The pair tried carp fishing in a private pond before talks on Gaza and other international issues at the 17th-century residence during Vance's family visit. Lammy did not catch any fish, and all fish caught were returned to the lake.
At the meeting's start, Vance joked that all his children had caught fish while Lammy had not.
The Foreign Office said Lammy wrote to the Environment Agency to explain the administrative error, confirm purchase of licences, and commend their work protecting Britain’s fisheries.
A one-day licence for trout and coarse fishing costs £7.30. Illegal fishing can lead to fines up to £2,500 and the seizure of equipment. Earlier this year, six anglers in London were fined a total of £2,182 for fishing without licences.
An Environment Agency spokesperson confirmed the licences have been purchased and emphasised that licences support sustainable fishing and healthy fish stocks.
Lammy’s prompt response underscores the importance of adhering to regulations to protect the nation’s fisheries.
