A lightsaber wielded by Darth Vader in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi sold for $3.6 million (£2.7 million) at a Propstore auction in Los Angeles on Thursday.
Propstore, based in Buckinghamshire, said the piece became the highest-priced Star Wars item ever sold at auction. Brandon Alinger, Propstore's COO, called it "incredibly special" to see a symbol of one of cinema's greatest sagas achieve such a valuation.
The saber was filmed extensively at Elstree Studios in Hertfordshire and remains one of the most recognisable props in cinematic history.
Other notable sales included Harrison Ford's bullwhip, belt and holster from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, which fetched $485,100 (£360,000), and a Platform 9¾ sign from the Harry Potter films that sold for $138,600 (£102,573), well above its estimate.
The sale highlights the enduring cultural power of Star Wars and the fervent demand among collectors for original film artifacts.
