The Cameroon international suffered a hamstring injury in pre-season but has been training on his fitness in the United States. Although he will miss the Everton match, Onana could feature in the final friendly against Fiorentina at Old Trafford on 9 August.
"We are always looking to improve the team," Amorim said. "It depends on the market and on sales. You can see our goalkeepers: Heaton is leaner, Bayindir has impressed, and Onana will continue to develop."
