British grandfather charged with attempted murder after alleged pool attack on daughter-in-law

Mark Gibbon, 62, from Beaconsfield, England, was arrested in Davenport, Florida, after allegedly attempting to drown his 33-year-old daughter-in-law in a resort swimming pool during a dispute over his grandchildren.

According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, Gibbon pushed and repeatedly held the woman’s head underwater at the Solterra Resort, near Walt Disney World. A young girl jumped into the pool and alerted two nearby sisters, who threatened to call authorities, prompting Gibbon to release his daughter-in-law.

Charged with attempted murder

Gibbon faces attempted second-degree murder and two counts of battery. Sheriff Grady Judd said Gibbon may end up “spending a lot more time in Florida than he had anticipated.” He remains in Polk County Jail.

Authorities say a family holiday turned violent when a grandfather allegedly tried to drown his daughter-in-law amid an argument over his grandchildren.
