Armed men posing as officials from India's central bank robbed a van transporting 70 million rupees ($800,000) in the southern state of Karnataka, police said.
A major manhunt is under way to locate the suspects who carried out the daylight theft in the heart of Bengaluru.
The robbery happened on Wednesday afternoon when six men in an SUV stopped a cash transport van on a busy road moving funds between bank branches, Bengaluru police commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh told INLIBER.
The van carried a driver, a cash custodian and two armed guards.
According to Mr. Singh, the robbers claimed they were Reserve Bank of India officials and needed to verify the documents for transporting such a large sum. They directed the cash custodian and guards to leave their weapons in the van and board the SUV, while the driver continued to drive with the cash.
The SUV followed the van for several kilometres before the gang forced the driver out, had the custodian and guards exit the SUV, then transferred the cash at gunpoint and fled.
The area had limited CCTV coverage, and investigators are examining whether the gang used multiple vehicles during the operation.
The cash transport company has filed a police complaint.
Police said the SUV used in the heist bore a fake number plate and a sticker reading "Government of India". Investigators are also probing whether company employees were involved.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said police recovered the SUV used in the heist. Home Minister G Parameshwara, however, said it is not yet clear which vehicle the suspects fled in, adding that they may have swapped cars to move the money; he expressed confidence police would crack the case, as they have in recent major bank robberies in the state.
In May, 59 kg of gold valued at about 532.6 million rupees was stolen from a Vijayapura district bank using a duplicate locker key. Police say 39 kg of gold and some cash have been recovered, with 15 people arrested, including two former employees.
