Are PIF’s Clubs Maneuvering: Could Liverpool Land Newcastle Striker Alexander Isak if Darwin Núñez Joins Al-Hilal?
Reports suggest Saudi-backed Al-Hilal are interested in Darwin Núñez, potentially freeing funds for Liverpool to pursue Newcastle's Alexander Isak, both clubs owned by Saudi Public Investment Fund.
Saudi-backed Al-Hilal are reportedly exploring a summer move for Liverpool striker Darwin Núñez.
Sources indicate that intermediaries are working on a deal that could see the Uruguay international head to the Saudi Pro League. Should Núñez depart, Liverpool would gain financial flexibility to intensify their bid for Newcastle’s Alexander Isak, another PIF-owned asset.
PIF’s Balancing Act
Darwin Núñez, 26, remains a target for several European clubs, including Serie A champions Napoli. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund holds major stakes in both Al-Hilal (75%) and Newcastle United (80%).
Newcastle turned down Liverpool’s initial £110m offer for the Swedish forward, valuing Isak closer to £150m. Some Magpies supporters question whether PIF is prioritizing other projects over Newcastle’s ambitions.
Financial Fair Play and Liverpool’s Position
Financial analyst Kieran Maguire believes Liverpool could still afford a high-value signing even if Núñez remains. “Liverpool have room under profit and sustainability rules for another £200-250m of spending,” he said, noting the club has invested £265m on new recruits this summer while recouping £115m through departures.
“There’s little evidence of a quid pro quo between PIF clubs—Liverpool stands to gain most if a deal goes through, as Newcastle have resisted selling Isak so far.”
Isak’s Future
Signed from Real Sociedad in 2022 for £60m, Alexander Isak finished last season as Newcastle’s top scorer, helping secure the club’s first major trophy in 70 years. Amid reported interest from Liverpool, the 25-year-old was left out of Newcastle’s Asia tour with a minor thigh niggle but has since resumed training in England.
Manager Eddie Howe has stated Isak must “earn the right” to return to first-team action and confirmed no further bids have been received following Liverpool’s offer.
With both Liverpool and Al-Hilal pursuing top strikers, PIF’s multi-club ownership is under scrutiny as fans question where the fund’s priorities lie.
