Apple to Discontinue 5.4-Inch iPhone Mini Models in 2022

Renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reports that Apple will retire the 5.4-inch iPhone in 2022. Instead of the ultra-compact option, the company will introduce a significantly larger smartphone featuring a 6.7-inch display.

The final 5.4-inch model is expected to be the iPhone 13 mini, scheduled for release this fall alongside three other new models.

In 2022, Apple will launch four new iPhones: two standard models with 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch screens, and two Pro versions with the same screen sizes. This shift marks Apple's first move from offering an affordable compact phone to providing a more accessible large-screen smartphone.

Additionally, the insider revealed that the 2022 iPhones will feature a 48-megapixel camera equipped with a large 1/1.3-inch sensor and 1.25-micron pixel size. Although this pixel size is smaller than the 1.7 microns found in the iPhone 12 Pro Max, Kuo explains that for 12-megapixel images, the effective pixel size will be approximately 2.5 microns. This enhancement allows the sensor to capture significantly more light, improving photo quality.

Previously, Kuo indicated that Apple might transition from the traditional notch to punch-hole displays in 2022, similar to many modern Android smartphones. Such designs could debut in Pro models and, if production volumes permit, in more affordable base models as well. Furthermore, a new iPhone SE may be released in 2022, retaining its classic design with a Touch ID button located on the lower bezel.
