What sensory tools do you carry with you?

Sensory sensitivity is a hallmark of autism, with many autistic individuals experiencing the world in unique ways that significantly influence their interaction with their surroundings. These sensory differences often mean heightened awareness or sensitivity to stimuli that others might barely notice.

When sensory input becomes overwhelming (overstimulation) or insufficient (understimulation), it can lead to sensory meltdowns or shutdowns. Thankfully, sensory aids and stim tools have gained popularity and accessibility, empowering autistic individuals to self-regulate and meet their sensory needs effectively.

Below are six sensory items that I find invaluable, some of which are also favorites among my social media community. Remember, sensory preferences are deeply personal—experiment with these tools to find what best supports your sensory well-being.

Stim Tools

Stimming involves repetitive behaviors that help process sensory input and regulate emotions. Various items can facilitate stimming, providing comfort and focus.

Spinning Pop Socket

Like many, I use a pop socket on my phone for grip and as a stand. I chose one that spins, effectively turning my phone into a discreet fidget spinner. Since my phone is always with me, this ensures I have a stim tool handy anytime.

This spinning pop socket is subtle and easy to conceal, which is helpful in environments where expressing sensory needs openly might not feel safe. It allows for discreet self-regulation without drawing unwanted attention.

Infinity Cube and Other Fidget Tools

Fidget tools come in countless varieties and serve as effective stimming aids. While often termed 'toys,' it’s important to recognize these items as essential sensory tools, not optional playthings.

My preferred stim is the infinity cube—a compact, foldable cube that can be manipulated endlessly. Other popular options include:

  • Magnet Rings: Three magnetic rings that click and spin together
  • Fidget Spinners: Small devices with ball bearings that spin smoothly
  • Bike Chain Fidget: Metal fidget made from linked bike chain pieces
  • Fidget Cube: A multi-sided cube with various tactile features
  • Chewelry: Silicone wearable chewable items for oral sensory input

Snacks and Hydration

Sensory experiences aren’t only external—they include internal sensations like hunger and thirst, known as interoception. Many autistic people, especially those who mask extensively, can lose touch with these internal cues, sometimes due to hyperfocus or past unmet needs.

Some may feel hunger intensely, while others might not notice until it becomes urgent. Additionally, dietary preferences or sensitivities can make finding suitable snacks challenging. Carrying preferred snacks and water ensures you can nourish yourself whenever needed.

Scented Items

Sensory sensitivities extend to smell, and some autistic individuals find comfort in specific scents. Using scented items as a stim can aid in calming and regulating emotions.

Inhaling a favorite fragrance can support relaxation by lowering heart rate and physiological arousal, making scented stims a powerful tool for managing sensory overload.

Sunglasses

Sunglasses are invaluable not only outdoors but also indoors for those sensitive to bright or fluorescent lighting. Wearing sunglasses can reduce visual overstimulation and provide comfort in various environments.

If you notice someone wearing sunglasses indoors, respect their sensory needs—they understand what helps them feel safe and comfortable.

Ear Protection

Auditory sensitivity and misophonia are common challenges. Noise-canceling headphones, earplugs, or acoustic loops can help manage overwhelming sounds.

Experiment with different ear protection options to find what feels most comfortable and effective, as tactile sensitivities can affect how well headphones work for you.

White Noise Apps

White noise applications are widely available and often free. These apps provide customizable soothing sounds that can help balance sensory input during overstimulation or understimulation.

Creating a personalized white noise mix can be a valuable strategy for maintaining sensory equilibrium in challenging environments.
