2023 Tesla Model 3 and Model Y Steering Issues Prompt Government Probe – Impacting 280,000 Vehicles

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) launches an in-depth investigation into steering malfunctions affecting Tesla’s 2023 Model 3 and Model Y, raising safety concerns for hundreds of thousands of drivers.

Tesla Inc. (TSLA) is currently under federal scrutiny following multiple reports highlighting steering malfunctions in approximately 280,000 units of its 2023 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles.

Important Highlights

  • The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has officially opened an investigation into steering control issues in Tesla’s 2023 Model 3 and Model Y.
  • Drivers have reported steering failures that have led to at least one documented accident among a dozen incident reports.
  • Previously, Tesla has faced challenges related to its Autopilot self-driving technology and concerns surrounding the actual driving range of its electric vehicles.

The ongoing probe by NHTSA may escalate into a detailed engineering review and could potentially result in a recall if safety risks are confirmed. The steering problems identified so far are specific to the 2023 versions of the Model 3 and Model Y.

Although no injuries have been reported, one of the twelve cases involving steering failure unfortunately led to a collision.

This investigation follows a prior inquiry initiated in August 2022 when NHTSA requested additional data from Tesla concerning its Autopilot and driver assistance systems, after preliminary findings flagged safety concerns related to Tesla crashes involving stationary vehicles.

In a notable incident from November 2022, a Tesla Model S operating in full self-driving mode suddenly applied brakes, triggering an eight-car accident on the San Francisco Bay Bridge.

Additionally, Tesla faces scrutiny over allegations that it deliberately overstated the driving range of its electric vehicles. Reports from July 2023 revealed that Tesla maintained a covert team to suppress thousands of complaints related to this issue.
