Wreckage of American Destroyer Discovered at Record Depth in the Pacific Ocean

An extraordinary discovery of a WWII American destroyer wreck at an unprecedented ocean depth near the Philippines.

In 1944, following a fierce battle with the Imperial Japanese Navy, the USS Samuel B. Roberts sank in the Pacific Ocean.

Victor Vescovo, billionaire explorer and founder of Caladan Oceanic, announced the remarkable discovery of the USS Samuel B. Roberts wreckage near the Philippines. This escort destroyer of the U.S. Navy sank 78 years ago during World War II.

The USS Samuel B. Roberts was a 93-meter (305-foot) long escort destroyer built for the U.S. Navy during World War II. It sank in October 1944, just months after its maiden voyage, following combat with Imperial Japanese Navy vessels.

Prior to this discovery, the exact location of the shipwreck remained unknown. Utilizing submersibles and sonar-equipped vessels, Vescovo and members of the British EYOS expeditions conducted six dives between June 17 and 24. On June 18, they successfully identified the destroyer by its distinctive triple-torpedo tube configuration unique to the Samuel B. Roberts.

Subsequent dives revealed the shipwreck in two main sections, stretching from bow to stern. Vescovo also noted the presence of potentially live munitions, including 40mm guns and depth charges, still secured in their mounts.

In March, Victor Vescovo, alongside scientist Osvaldo Ulloa, descended into the Chilean Trench in the Pacific Ocean to a depth of 8,000 meters (26,247 feet), where they discovered previously unknown marine species.
