Unveiling an Ancient Maya City Hidden in Guatemala's Jungles

Discover the remarkable discovery of a 3,000-year-old Maya city featuring pyramids, unique sculptures, and advanced urban planning deep in the Guatemalan jungle.

Deep within the northern jungles of Guatemala, archaeologists have uncovered the remains of an ancient Maya city dating back nearly 3,000 years. This remarkable ceremonial center boasts pyramids, monumental sculptures, and a sophisticated infrastructure that reflects the ingenuity of early Maya civilization.

Named Los Abuelos after two anthropomorphic statues found on site, these sculptures are believed to represent revered ancestors integral to ancient ritual practices. Experts date these figures to between 2,300 and 2,500 years ago, highlighting the site's deep historical significance.

The settlement lies approximately 21 kilometers from Tikal, one of the most important archaeological sites in the Petén region. Dating to the Middle Preclassic period (800–500 BCE), Los Abuelos is considered one of the earliest and most important ritual centers of the Maya, situated near the border with Mexico.

The Guatemalan Ministry of Culture highlights the city's well-planned architecture, with pyramids and monuments adorned by distinctive regional iconography. Archaeologists also uncovered a 33-meter-high pyramid decorated with Preclassic frescoes, alongside an uncommon ancient canal system, showcasing advanced engineering skills.

Spanning an area of roughly 16 square kilometers, Los Abuelos was discovered by a collaborative team of Guatemalan and Slovak researchers. It, along with two nearby sites, forms a previously unknown “triangle of cities,” shedding new light on the complexity of Maya urban networks.

Experts believe this discovery will transform our understanding of the ritualistic and political structures of pre-Columbian Maya society. Furthermore, it emphasizes the impressive level of architectural sophistication and engineering prowess achieved by this ancient civilization.
