Top Diabetes Apps Used in 2025: Features, Prices, and User Insights

Discover the most popular diabetes management apps in 2025 as revealed by a comprehensive AADE survey. Learn which apps people with diabetes actually use and why, with detailed insights into features, usability, and integration.

In 2024, the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE) conducted an extensive survey to understand which diabetes management apps people with diabetes (PWDs) find most valuable and why. This survey, involving nearly 200 participants, sheds light on the real-world preferences of PWDs compared to the recommendations from diabetes educators.

The survey focused on uncovering top apps for food and carbohydrate tracking, fitness monitoring, glucose data logging, and other health management tools. Educators also participated, helping to identify 30 standout apps for inclusion in AADE’s updated DANA technology platform.

Food and Carb Tracking Apps

Among respondents, 58% regularly use apps for food logging or carbohydrate counting. The top five apps favored by users include:

  • MyFitnessPal
  • One Drop
  • Calorie King
  • Loop
  • mySugr

Diabetes educators, on the other hand, often recommend alternatives like Weight Watchers, LoseIt, SparkPeople, Glucosurfer, and Carb Manager. Users highlighted reasons such as intuitive interfaces, extensive food databases, seamless syncing, and personalized features as key benefits.

One user praised Sugarmate for its detailed glucose graphing capabilities, while many noted recommendations from friends, family, or healthcare professionals influenced their app choices.

Fitness Tracking Apps

Fitness app usage was nearly evenly split, with 51% of respondents using them. The most popular fitness apps were:

  • Apple Health
  • Fitbit
  • MyFitnessPal
  • One Drop
  • Samsung Health

The inclusion of Samsung Health surprised some but was also recognized by educators alongside ILoveFitness, StepTracker, and FitScript. Many users appreciated apps pre-installed on their devices and valued compatibility with smartwatches for effortless tracking.

Fitbit received praise for its simplicity and wireless data uploads, enhancing user experience.

Blood Glucose Monitoring (BGM) and Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) Apps

Two-thirds of participants use apps to log and analyze glucose data. Their top choices included:

  • Dexcom Clarity
  • One Drop
  • Tidepool
  • OneTouch
  • Dexcom G5

Educators favored Medtronic CareLink, Tandem t:connect, Dexcom Share, Contour, and Diasend. A common frustration was limited app options tied to proprietary devices, leading to complaints about usability and lack of alternatives.

Other Diabetes Health Apps

Only 37% reported using additional apps for diabetes management. Popular mentions were:

  • Beyond Type 1
  • Nightscout
  • MySugr
  • Tidepool
  • Dexcom Clarity

Educators also highlighted apps like Glucose Buddy, GlucoseZone, GoodRX, Diabetes360, and Headspace for mindfulness. Patients emphasized the value of community support found through apps like Beyond Type 1 and the comprehensive remote monitoring capabilities of Nightscout.

Notably, the DIY Loop app was frequently mentioned but remains unreviewed by AADE due to regulatory status, with future inclusion anticipated as Tidepool advances its development.

User Feedback: Praises and Challenges

Patients expressed a desire for diabetes educators to be well-versed in app functionalities and capable of guiding usage effectively. They valued educators understanding app benefits, features, and integration potential to better assist with personalized diabetes care.

Common frustrations included difficulties in sharing device data with healthcare providers and limited interoperability among apps, particularly regarding Apple Health integration.

However, many users applauded apps like One Drop for its combined tracking and coaching features, as well as affordable supplies, enhancing their diabetes management experience.

Selected Apps for 2024 AADE DANA Platform

Analysis of survey motivations revealed that while food tracking app users prioritized features and functions, users of other categories valued integration and compatibility most. This insight guided AADE’s selection of 30 apps for review and inclusion in the 2024 DANA technology portal.

AADE’s ongoing commitment to incorporating real patient feedback ensures that the DANA platform remains a relevant and practical resource for both educators and people living with diabetes.

Stay tuned as these apps become more accessible through the educators’ portal, empowering better diabetes management in 2024 and beyond.
