The Broader Impact of Robotics on Employment

With robots becoming more common in workplaces, concerns arise about job displacement. A 2013 Oxford study estimated that 47% of current jobs at higher risk may be automated within 20 years.

However, an alternative perspective suggests that by delegating repetitive or strenuous tasks to robots, humans can focus on more engaging, innovative, and high-tech roles. David Cann, CEO of Double Robotics—the company behind robots used at MIT—shares this optimistic outlook.

Economist Robert Atkinson from the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation argues that fears about robots eliminating jobs are based on superficial analysis. In reality, automation adoption has slowed due to two main factors:

  1. Thirty years ago, the U.S. invested heavily in robotics and software development, but current investments are more conservative.
  2. Low-hanging fruits such as airport self-check-in kiosks have already been implemented.

Atkinson adds that the lack of a national productivity growth strategy in the U.S. further dampens automation progress.

"Other countries like Australia have a National Productivity Commission dedicated to identifying growth opportunities, while in the U.S., such initiatives remain largely speculative," he explains.

Additionally, companies often find it more cost-effective to employ low-wage workers than to invest in automation—unless labor costs rise significantly. Should workers in low-paying sectors push for higher wages, similar to the fast-food employees in New York who secured a $15 hourly minimum wage, automation could accelerate.

Labor law expert Harry Matiason of Littler Mendelson emphasizes this connection:

"Technological progress is inevitable. With rising labor costs, employers will find it economically sensible to transfer some tasks to robots, speeding up widespread automation. If economic activity continues, robots will become a common presence within the next five years."

Why Robot Integration Is a Positive Evolution

Both Matiason and Atkinson agree there is little cause for alarm. Automation of nearly half of high-risk jobs does not equate to mass unemployment.

"Job roles will shift, with new positions emerging—ones we can't yet imagine. History shows us similar patterns: in 1870, agriculture employed 70–80% of the population; today, it's just 1%. The introduction of new technologies has historically maintained or even reduced unemployment levels," Matiason explains.

"Looking ahead ten years, the focus will be less on job loss and more on opportunities for learning and career growth. For workers engaged in low-skilled roles for a decade, this change could be welcome," he adds.

Matiason foresees exciting times ahead, with labor laws adapting to address human-robot interactions, including privacy concerns as robots record audio and visual data.

Though the pace at which robots penetrate all industries remains uncertain, one thing is clear: automation is here to stay. While some fear job loss, others anticipate economic growth and improved standards of living. Increased productivity will allow companies to earn more and offer better wages.

Yet, one debate remains unresolved: how will guests feel when greeted at a hotel reception by an eerily lifelike actroid mimicking human gestures?
