Project MUD 2025: Inspiring Diabetes Endurance Sports Journey from Texas - Join the Movement!
Discover how Eric Dutcher, a Texas native with type 1 diabetes, transformed his life through endurance sports and founded Project MUD to empower diabetics worldwide.

Meet Eric Dutcher, a resilient type 1 diabetic from Dallas, Texas, who turned his diagnosis into a powerful source of motivation by creating Project MUD — an acronym for “More Unstoppable Diabetics.” This inspiring initiative was sparked by a profound mindset shift a decade after his diagnosis, transforming despair into determination fueled by love and support.
Over the last seven years, Eric has competed in numerous endurance events across the U.S. and internationally, proving that diabetes is no barrier to achieving extraordinary athletic feats.
Eric Dutcher’s Journey: From Diagnosis to Endurance Champion
Thanksgiving dinner was filled with warmth and laughter, yet Eric felt isolated, staring at his diabetes supplies — needles, vials, test strips — that seemed more like a daunting challenge than tools. At 26, newly diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, he faced fear and uncertainty that threatened to stifle his adventurous spirit.
For over fifteen years, Eric battled self-doubt and limited his life due to diabetes. However, after meeting Heather, his future wife, he rediscovered his strength and passion for physical challenges. Together, they embraced obstacle course races, marathons, triathlons, and even a Half Ironman, breaking barriers and defying expectations.

Heather’s unwavering encouragement helped Eric push past his limits, turning setbacks into lessons. From losing an insulin pump mid-race to managing extreme blood sugar levels, Eric learned resilience and adaptability. His journey inspired him to support others facing similar battles.
Now married for seven years, Eric and Heather run a counseling and life coaching practice focused on empowering diabetics and their families. Recognized by Children’s Medical Center Dallas, their virtual and in-person coaching helps clients overcome diabetes burnout, set goals, and reclaim their passions.
Eric’s unstoppable mindset began with one mud run and blossomed into Project MUD — a collaboration with Tough Mudder and the Diabetes Sports Project. This partnership fosters a community where diabetics support each other through team-based obstacle courses, emphasizing camaraderie over competition.

Project MUD aims to recruit the first all-diabetic team for the 2024 World’s Toughest Mudder in Atlanta, a grueling 24-hour obstacle race. Additionally, city events nationwide offer opportunities for diabetics to challenge themselves on 5k and classic courses, with special appearances by athletes like Brandon Denson, the first diabetic competitor on NBC’s American Ninja Warrior.
Eric’s message is clear: diabetes is not a barrier but a variable to be managed. Through Project MUD, he hopes to inspire others to break free from fear, reclaim their dreams, and embrace the freedom that comes with resilience and community support.
Thank you, Eric, for your incredible inspiration. Best wishes for your upcoming Mudder events and continued success!
