Performance is arguably the most critical aspect of any PC, and every user should have a toolkit of methods to combat system slowdowns. Even with a powerful, new computer, improper maintenance can quickly lead to noticeable lag. Here are some straightforward strategies to boost your PC’s performance, including preventive measures.

Remove Unnecessary Programs

This refers to applications that you don’t use regularly but that constantly consume system resources. Disabling the automatic startup of these “extra” programs and services will free up valuable RAM.

To do this, click Start > Run (or press Win+R on Windows 7), type msconfig, and press Enter. A window will appear allowing you to disable programs from launching at startup:

Next, go to Start > Run, type services.msc, and press Enter (or simply type “Services” in the Start menu). In the list of services, pay attention to the Windows Update service and the Security Center. However, only disable the Security Center if you have antivirus software installed to ensure your PC’s protection is maintained.

Also, apply logical reasoning:

  • If you don’t have a tablet PC, disable the Tablet PC Input Service.
  • If you don’t use a TV tuner, disable the Windows Media Center Receiver service.
  • Services like Fax, Telephony, and Smart Card may not consume large amounts of RAM, but following Occam’s Razor, it’s best to disable those you don’t need.

Cleaning and Error Correction

After disabling unnecessary programs, it’s time to tidy up. Use the free PC optimization tool CCleaner.

Its interface is user-friendly and intuitive. Regularly (at least once a month) run disk cleaning and registry cleaning. This helps prevent issues and can identify causes of decreased performance. CCleaner also allows you to manage startup programs effectively.

Disk Defragmentation

Most users have heard about defragmentation but may neglect its importance. Large files can become fragmented—stored in pieces across free spaces on your hard drive. To fix this, use the built-in Windows Disk Defragmenter found in the Control Panel.

Note that Windows 7 and Vista perform automatic defragmentation, so this step is especially important for users of other Windows versions.

Overclocking

Overclocking your PC’s hardware can boost performance but is a complex process, especially if you aim to increase CPU frequency and optimize RAM and graphics memory. This topic deserves a dedicated guide, and plenty of resources are available online for those interested.
