Painful Derby Display: Spurs Apologise after 4-1 Arsenal Defeat

Tottenham manager Thomas Frank and goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario apologise to fans after a chastening north London derby loss to Arsenal.

Tottenham manager Thomas Frank and goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario apologised to supporters after a chastening north London derby defeat to Arsenal.

Spurs were beaten 4-1 at the Emirates Stadium, a heavy loss that featured Eberechi Eze scoring a hat-trick against the club Tottenham had chased in the summer transfer window.

Richarlison pulled one back with a spectacular 40-yard strike, but Tottenham’s expected goals (xG) tally of 0.07 was the lowest in the Premier League this season.

Frank said the defeat was extremely painful and that he takes responsibility for the lineup, noting that the performance failed to win enough duels.

He had switched Spurs to a back three, but Arsenal sliced through the defense in the first half and led 2-0 at the break thanks to goals from Leandro Trossard and Eze.

After the break, Eze added a late third shortly after the restart, before Arsenal completed the scoring in the closing minutes.

Vicario accepted the team did not fight today and stressed the need for calm heads, emphasising that their game plan needed to be followed and emotions kept in check.

We will keep the noise out and focus

Tottenham have repeatedly struggled to threaten in the final third this season. In a 1-0 home defeat to Chelsea earlier this month, they managed just three attempts and posted an xG of 0.1 — one of the league’s lowest figures. Their xG of 0.17 in the 1-0 loss to Bournemouth in August was only marginally better.

Frank added that solving this has been an ongoing task and that, although the result will attract scrutiny, the team will stay focused on improving and on the next challenge in Europe.

Next up, Spurs travel to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Key takeaway: Tottenham must rebound quickly with renewed attacking intent and defensive focus, ignoring the post-match noise and responding on the European stage. BBC Sport
