Step-by-step guide to configure Mail.app for seamless integration with popular email services including Gmail, Yandex, and Mail.ru.

One of the standout features introduced in OS X Lion is the completely revamped Mail.app client. Both its interface and functionality have been enhanced: related messages are now automatically grouped into "Conversations," search tags accelerate finding important emails, and the favorites bar offers quick access to your most-used folders.

Mail.app has impressed me so much that after nearly seven years of relying on Gmail's web interface, I have fully transitioned to this desktop Apple application. Its speed, responsive interface, and deep system integration make daily email management a pleasure.

In this guide, I’ll walk you through configuring Mail.app to work smoothly with popular email providers. This comes in response to questions from readers on social media platforms like Twitter and VKontakte.

I hope you find this tutorial helpful.

Gmail

Mail.app includes built-in support for several of the world's most popular email services. While some regional providers might not be included by default, if you use Gmail or Yahoo, you're in luck.

When you first sign into Gmail using Safari, a prompt will appear asking if you'd like to use Mail.app, iCal calendar, and iChat for your Google account. Simply enter your login credentials to proceed.

The setup process is remarkably straightforward—no need to manually enter server addresses or port numbers; just your email and password.

If your Gmail account is configured to use the IMAP protocol, Mail.app will replicate your label and folder hierarchy. The initial synchronization may take some time, during which your computer might become noisier as Spotlight indexes the new content. After a few hours, performance will normalize.

Yandex

Configuring Yandex mail requires a few additional steps. Start by selecting "Add Account" from the File menu. Enter your name, email address, and password.

Next, choose the IMAP protocol for incoming mail, which offers several advantages over POP. Use imap.yandex.ru as the incoming mail server.

For outgoing mail, set the SMTP server to smtp.yandex.ru and enable authentication by checking the respective box.

After creating the account, open Mail.app preferences (File → Preferences or Command + ,), select your Yandex account, and under the "Account Information" tab, click the SMTP server dropdown and choose "Edit SMTP Server List."

Go to the "Advanced" tab, check "Use custom port," and enter port 465. Save your changes by clicking "OK."

Then, switch to the "Advanced" settings tab, set the incoming mail port to 993, enable "Use SSL," and check "Include when checking for new mail." Your Yandex mail is now configured for secure and efficient use.

Mail.ru

Mail.ru previously supported IMAP, but currently, POP is the recommended protocol. To set up, add a new account via File → Add Account, entering your name, email, and password.

Select POP as the protocol. For incoming mail, use pop.mail.ru. If your email domain is different (such as inbox.ru, list.ru, or bk.ru), adjust the server accordingly (e.g., pop.inbox.ru).

For outgoing mail, use smtp.mail.ru, or the corresponding SMTP server for your domain (e.g., smtp.list.ru, smtp.bk.ru). Enable authentication by selecting the respective option.

That’s it—your Mail.ru account is ready to send and receive emails through Mail.app.

Among all the email services, I personally prefer Gmail due to its robust spam filtering, enhanced security features like two-factor authentication, and generous mailbox capacity. I’d love to hear your feedback on using Mail.app—what features you enjoy and what could be improved! 😊
