Former Spain international Juan Mata has completed a move to Melbourne Victory, eager to play a leading role in Australia’s A-League.
The 37-year-old midfielder, a key member of Spain’s 2010 World Cup and 2012 European Championship squads, arrives from rivals Western Sydney Wanderers after making just seven starts last season.
“I felt the energy at the club and saw their ambition,” Mata said. “I’m motivated to help this team win trophies and contribute to a long-term project to develop football in Australia.”
Mata enjoyed a stellar club career, rising to prominence at Valencia before winning multiple trophies at Chelsea, including the Champions League and Europa League. In 2014 he joined Manchester United for a then-record £37.1m fee, securing another Europa League and domestic cups.
After spells with Galatasaray and Vissel Kobe, Mata brings his experience to Victory, who finished runners-up last season and open their campaign against Auckland FC on October 18.
