Jonathan Ive's Timeless Lessons: Embracing Care and Humanity in the Digital World

Explore the inspiring insights from Jonathan Ive on the importance of care, craftsmanship, and human-centered design in technology.

René Ritchie, editor-in-chief of the iMore blog, recently shared his reflections on an interview with Jonathan Ive conducted by Charlie Rose, revealing valuable lessons drawn from the renowned designer’s philosophy. Today, we present a translated version of his article highlighting the core principles that guide Sir Jonathan Ive — a visionary whose work touches millions globally.

During a recent conversation with a friend, the topic of Ive and Marc Newson’s interview with Charlie Rose came up. Before my friend even mentioned his most memorable moment, I anticipated it would be Ive’s reflections on care. As Apple’s chief designer, Ive rarely grants interviews, yet he remains one of the most influential figures in modern technology. While the contributions of Steve Jobs and the entire Apple design team are equally significant, Ive’s impact on devices that have transformed everyday life is immense. What’s truly remarkable is the way he treats these creations as if they were living entities.

"I believe care is something you simply can’t ignore — the care with which people craft these products and strive to make them better. They don’t create for themselves but for every individual who will use them. There’s a profound humanity in this, and it’s truly inspiring. We believe, though it’s hard to explain why, that feeling cared for is part of human nature. Often, it’s easier to sense when care is missing, especially in an industrial environment where mass production leaves little room for it. The essence isn’t in how we treat objects, but how we treat each other. This is a special obsession and dedication, sometimes bordering on fanaticism, to put in every effort to create something perfect not for oneself, but for others."

The interview is filled with vivid expressions like “painting the back of a dresser” and “design is only noticed when it’s absent,” yet the central message transcends mere attention to detail — it’s about caring for people. How a product looks, feels, and functions leaves a lasting impression. By interacting with an object, we can instantly discern if it’s a fleeting trend or a timeless classic, essential or unnecessary.

Is a cheaper tablet or laptop truly more economical than one twice the price but lasting three times longer? Does a low price outweigh the joy of ownership? Having purchased numerous Apple devices alongside some less valuable gadgets, I realize that Ive’s philosophy reflects a deep appreciation for craftsmanship and quality over quantity.

I also resonate with the idea that the "how" often matters more than the "what." For Ive, the story behind the making of an object holds greater significance than the object itself.

"We tend to focus much more on HOW something was made than on other stages of the process. It’s not about who or when something was invented, but about how it was crafted. We genuinely find this far more fascinating than the 'biography' of things."

Apple will continue to release more iPhones, iPads, and Macs. Updates like iOS 8 and OS X 10.10 are expected soon, alongside new variations and entirely new products. While radical shifts in strategy may be unlikely, the more intriguing questions revolve around the creation process. What design choices will be made? How will they align with engineering capabilities? What compromises are necessary? How will these decisions impact the final product? How will interfaces evolve? What materials will be used and how? What gaps remain to be filled and challenges to overcome?

This creative journey is truly exhilarating.

And this inspiration extends beyond Apple. Hearing Ive discuss his work motivates me, as a writer, editor, and podcast creator, to approach my craft with equal care. It encourages me to tackle complex topics and seek meaningful answers for my readers and listeners. It pushes me to work harder and strive for higher goals.

Jonathan Ive may shy away from the spotlight, but his work speaks volumes. If you haven’t yet watched this interview, I highly recommend it. It offers one of the clearest insights into what makes Apple the company we know today.
