Developed by experts at the International Centre for Advanced Powder Metallurgy and New Materials Research in India, this innovative mask actively blocks virus and bacterial replication on its surface, effectively destroying harmful microbes.
To achieve this, Indian researchers applied a suspension of copper-based nanoparticles approximately 20 nanometers in size onto one of the mask’s layers. These nanoparticles were produced using a flame spray pyrolysis (FSP) system, which converts solutions into nanopowders. This technique enables the mask to eliminate 99.9% of SARS-CoV-2 virus particles.
Production is carried out in partnership with Resil Chemicals, a company currently manufacturing two-layer disposable masks that filter air but do not kill viruses. The self-disinfecting mask has the potential to revolutionize protective gear.
The research team developed several mask prototypes. For example, a three-layer version can be worn alone, while a single-layer version is designed to be worn over another mask lacking antibacterial properties.
Scientists also highlighted the environmental concerns caused by widespread use of disposable synthetic masks, which contribute to non-biodegradable waste. These new masks are made from biodegradable cotton fabric, making them easier to dispose of with minimal ecological impact.
