How to Detect Deception: Proven Psychological Techniques to Uncover the Truth

Explore effective methods used by psychologists to identify lies and understand the subtle signs of deception in conversations.

There has been ongoing debate about whether reliable methods exist to detect liars. In December last year, the U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee released a report detailing the work of psychologists in correctional facilities. Among the insights were examples of techniques psychologists use to encourage inmates to reveal the truth.

Uncovering deception—whether from a friend embellishing a story or a client blatantly lying—requires effort. Fortunately, there are numerous strategies to spot dishonesty, as well as ways people learn to lie convincingly. Here, we share a unique approach employed by American psychologists working with prisoners that helps distinguish truth from falsehood.

Until recently, it was considered unethical in the U.S. to use psychological methods to influence inmates. However, subsequent research and legislation have permitted such practices. Last December, the Senate Intelligence Committee published a report on the work of two psychologists in correctional settings. Based on this report, Scientific American featured an article outlining the techniques used to work with inmates, including one that effectively reveals deception.

Typically, liars prepare their stories in advance, thinking through details, possible outcomes, and anticipated questions. Yet, they can be easily caught off guard.

By asking unexpected questions, you disrupt the liar’s train of thought and confuse them. If they begin to hesitate or stumble, it’s a strong indication they were previously dishonest.

We also identified additional signs of lying and emphasize the importance of paying close attention to body language, such as:

  1. Avoiding eye contact.
  2. Touching the face, neck, or mouth—scratching the nose or ears.
  3. Delayed or slowed responses to your words or actions.
  4. Gestures that contradict spoken words—for example, furrowed brows when saying "I love you."
  5. Using humor or sarcasm to divert the conversation.

Have you ever encountered deception in conversations? Were you able to recognize the lies, and if so, how did you do it? Share your experiences with us.
