Guernsey Ambulance Service to Mark 90th Anniversary with Memory Project

Guernsey's Island Memories Project collects stories from ambulance staff, volunteers, and patients to celebrate the 90th anniversary, with a photography exhibition planned in Candie Gardens in 2026.

Guernsey's ambulance service is marking its 90th year by inviting memories from people who have served, worked with, or benefited from its care. The Island Memories Project, a collaboration with Guernsey Museums, is expanding the project from its wartime origins into a living digital archive for future generations.

The initiative began by recording islanders' experiences during World War II and is now inviting reminiscences from current and former staff, volunteers, associates, and recipients of ambulance services.

Upcoming photography exhibition

To accompany the anniversary, Guernsey Museums will host a photography exhibition in Candie Gardens in 2026, showcasing images and stories from across the decades.

Kit Hughes, assistant museums curator, said: “We have been overwhelmed by public engagement with The Island Memories Project, and we’re grateful to everyone who has shared their memories so far. As we enter the second year of the project, we’re excited to partner with Guernsey's Ambulance Service to preserve their story through the people who lived it.”

Capture their memories

Dean de la Mare, head of operations at the service, added: “We’re proud to celebrate our 90th anniversary and want to hear from those with memories of the early years—stories of cliff rescues, the diving team, or the recompression chamber. We’ve already connected with retired staff through the St John Fellowship, but there are many more current and former volunteers and staff whose memories deserve recording.”

Expert comment:Local historian Dr. Emma Collins notes that first-hand memories add texture to official records, helping future generations understand life on the island. Digital archives ensure these stories endure beyond the moments they happened.
