Exploring the Alarming Rise of School Shootings: A Revealing Documentary
Discover the underlying causes behind school shootings through an insightful documentary that investigates the motivations of troubled youths and the societal response to this growing crisis.
On May 11, a tragic event shook Kazan when 19-year-old Ilnaz Galyaviev stormed a school and shot 10 people. Renowned journalist Ksenia Sobchak has reignited public attention by revisiting her previously produced documentary on this critical issue.
School shootings, globally recognized under the term "Columbine," trace back to the infamous 1999 attack by Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold at Columbine High School. Their assault resulted in 13 deaths and 23 injuries before they took their own lives. The perpetrators meticulously planned the attack over several months and documented their preparations in video diaries.

While school shootings have often been perceived as a Western phenomenon, numerous incidents and thwarted attacks have occurred across various Russian cities in recent years. Sobchak's documentary delves into the psyche of adolescents involved and examines who bears responsibility for combating these often-silenced crimes.
"Since 2017, there have been about ten teenage attacks on schools in cities like Kerch, Sterlitamak, Perm, Ulan-Ude, and Blagoveshchensk, with an additional 50 attempts prevented. The frequency of shootings is not decreasing, and neither arrests, internet censorship, nor television restrictions have resolved the problem. So, what will?" Sobchak questions in her film, initially produced in September 2020.

Through interviews with parents, law enforcement officials, and prevention specialists, the documentary paints a consistent profile of potential attackers: shy, withdrawn, bullied, emotionally neglected adolescents lacking parental and social support. Many attribute the issue to the internet and globalization, suggesting these factors have introduced such tragedies to their communities. However, the reality is more complex.
Online communities often serve as breeding grounds where teenagers discuss and plan school attacks. Monitoring these activities is challenging, especially when the participants do not exhibit obvious psychological disorders.

Virtual gaming environments frequently act as catalysts for passive aggression. Many perpetrators have been described as avid gamers and socially isolated individuals.
Interestingly, many adolescents attempt to share their struggles but are often unheard or ignored. Experts highlight that while parents may engage in conversations, these dialogues often dismiss the concerns of vulnerable youths, driving them to seek solace among like-minded peers online, which can ultimately lead to tragic outcomes.

Sobchak also interviewed individuals working tirelessly to prevent such disasters. She uncovered that the "Youth Environment Monitoring Center" received a substantial government fund allocation of $20 million. However, volunteer activists combating the same issues reported no awareness of the official's identity or the organization's activities. Following Sobchak's inquiries, the official blocked her team's contact numbers and declined to disclose how the funds were utilized.
