NASA has released the highest-resolution panoramic image ever taken of Mars, captured by the Curiosity rover. This breathtaking 1.8 billion-pixel photo offers an unprecedented view of the Red Planet's surface.
The panorama was meticulously stitched together from over a thousand individual shots taken with the Mastcam telephoto lens mounted on Curiosity. This detailed image allows scientists and enthusiasts alike to explore the Martian desert landscape, including Gale Crater—where Curiosity currently operates. The photo also features Slangpos Crater, the Vera Rubin Ridge, and Mount Sharp (Aeolis Mons), among other remarkable landmarks.
All images were captured in late November 2019 during a dedicated four-day photography session, with the rover spending six and a half hours each day capturing images. To maintain consistent lighting across the entire panorama regardless of shooting angles, all photos were taken at the same local time.
