Easily Save Videos to Watch Later on Your Couch with Boxee

Discover how to effortlessly bookmark and queue videos for later viewing on your TV using Boxee’s versatile media center solution.

In today’s digital world, the sheer volume of available content is astonishing. This abundance brings two important considerations: first, the need to carefully filter incoming media, and second, recognizing that not all content is timely or convenient to watch immediately. While filtering is a personal process with no one-size-fits-all tool, managing when and where to watch content can be handled with smart technology. For web pages, tools like Read It Later work well, and for articles in your feed, starring them in GReader helps save for later. But what about videos?

Until now, I hadn’t found a universal way to save videos for later viewing that fit my lifestyle. Personally, I prefer watching videos on my TV while relaxing on the couch—including YouTube videos—thanks to several capable media centers. However, I lacked a straightforward method to queue videos for later playback directly on my media center.

Previously, I resorted to starring videos in GReader and manually launching them in full-screen on my TV from the couch—a cumbersome process. Fortunately, a solution emerged from the makers of the media center I use: Boxee. Initially available on Mac OS, Boxee’s support has expanded to Windows, making it accessible to more users.

The solution is a bookmarklet—a small piece of code that works across all modern browsers. Here’s how it works: when you find a video you want to save for later, simply click the bookmarklet link you’ve added to your browser after visiting the Boxee project page.

Upon your first click, you’ll be prompted to log in (if you haven’t already on that device and browser). Afterward, the system adds the selected video to your viewing queue.

Importantly, you’re not limited to just YouTube videos; you can also add any media files accessible within the Boxee media center itself.

While the bookmarklet does have some limitations—such as lacking support for TED Talks and Google Video—Boxee allows you to queue TED videos directly within the media center, which mitigates this issue.

If you’re interested in effortlessly saving videos to watch later on your couch, visit the Boxee website and add the bookmarklet from their dedicated page to get started.
