A recent study reveals that while e-cigarettes can aid in quitting traditional cigarettes, overcoming the smoking habit itself remains a greater challenge.
Vaping devices can assist smokers in giving up conventional cigarettes, but the situation is more nuanced than it appears.
New research indicates that to successfully quit tobacco using e-cigarettes, frequent use of the vape is essential.
Researchers analyzed data from 24,000 participants involved in a nationwide tobacco use study conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau between 2014 and 2015—a period marked by a rise in e-cigarette usage.
The study aimed to understand how vaping supports individuals in maintaining a smoke-free period of three months, which is widely regarded as the most critical phase in quitting smoking.
Findings revealed that smokers who vaped 20 days or more per month were 2.8 times more likely to sustain three months without traditional cigarettes. In contrast, only 60% of those who vaped between 5 and 20 days per year managed to stay smoke-free for the same duration. Impressively, one-third of daily vapers completely quit smoking, whereas just 6% of infrequent vapers achieved this milestone.
"E-cigarettes can facilitate quitting conventional smoking, but only if they're used consistently. Owning a device and using it sporadically a few days a month is far less effective than regular use," said David Levy, professor at Georgetown University.
The longer smokers replaced traditional cigarettes with e-cigarettes, the higher their chances of quitting tobacco altogether. Each additional day of vaping increased the likelihood of quitting by 10%, underscoring the importance of frequent vaping for successful cessation.
However, pulmonologist Louis De Palo, professor at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, expresses concern over the appeal of e-cigarettes: "People rarely become addicted to other nicotine alternatives because they are unappealing—gum tastes unpleasant, nasal sprays cause irritation, and patches can irritate the skin. None satisfy the psychological craving since they don’t provide the hand-to-mouth action or inhalation. E-cigarettes are easy to use, enjoyable, and engaging, which makes them more addictive."
"This study doesn’t address how to quit e-cigarettes themselves," De Palo added.
"We’re not advocating e-cigarettes as the first recommendation for quitting, but if other methods fail, vaping can be considered," Levy notes.
E-cigarettes can be effective when someone is committed to quitting smoking entirely. However, it's important to recognize that vapor contains harmful substances, including heavy metals. Research is ongoing, and the long-term health effects of vaping are not fully understood. There may be unforeseen consequences yet to be discovered. Additionally, individuals who have never smoked but start vaping risk developing nicotine dependence.
The most effective strategy to quit smoking remains combining nicotine replacement methods with cognitive-behavioral therapy to break the conditioned reflex that triggers cigarette cravings. Addressing both physiological and psychological aspects is key to overcoming addiction.
