DIY Wi-Fi Signal Booster: Transform a CD Case into a Powerful Antenna

Have you ever faced frustrating moments of poor Wi-Fi connectivity when rushing out to the nearest store or waiting in your car for a loved one to get ready?

The main culprit is often a weak signal caused by obstacles such as trees, buildings, or distance. The best solution? Amplify your signal using an external antenna.

We’ll guide you through creating a straightforward, affordable, and reliable Wi-Fi antenna using everyday materials you likely already have at home!

This homemade antenna can boost your signal by approximately 8 dB, making it roughly ten times stronger—comparable to many commercial antennas designed for this purpose. The key is maintaining a 15 mm gap between the copper wire resonator and the reflective surface of the CD case.

Step 1: Create the Antenna Frame

Start with a standard CD case that holds 25 discs.

Cut the central spindle to a length of about 18 mm.

Use a round file to make slots for attaching the copper resonator.

The frame should look like this once prepared.

Step 2: Craft the Copper Wire Resonator

Use a 25 cm length of copper wire with a diameter between 2.5 and 4 mm (2.5 mm recommended).

If the wire is insulated, carefully strip the insulation off.

Bend the wire into a square 'glasses' shape, ensuring the distance between opposing sides’ centers is 30 to 31 mm.

Solder the wire ends together and tin the area where the coaxial cable will attach.

Solder the coaxial cable securely to the resonator.

Step 3: Attach the Resonator to the Frame

Position the resonator so that the distance from the base to every point of the wire is exactly 16 mm.

Use a couple of glue drops to attach the CD, shiny side facing upwards.

Insert the cable through the frame’s hole and fix the resonator in place with glue.

The double-square copper resonator will stay firmly mounted thanks to the adhesive.

Step 4: Connect the Antenna

We’ll demonstrate with a wireless access point (WAP), such as the D-Link 900AP+.

Experienced users can remove the original antenna and solder the new one directly. For others, connecting via an SMA connector is safer.

Be aware that opening and modifying your device may void warranties and risks damage. Only proceed if confident with electronics.

Handle the delicate wires carefully to avoid detaching them due to heat from soldering.
