When asked whether someone living in colder climates should trust the advice on raw food diets from those residing near the equator, my answer is nuanced: no one should blindly believe in raw food diets, but trying it can be eye-opening.

My journey with raw food began in Moscow back in 2012. On a hot summer day, after a long day at the studio, I stumbled upon a weekend farmer’s market—a concept now popular throughout the city. What makes these markets unique is that each vendor personally oversees the quality of their produce, often bringing fruits directly from local farms or regions like the Caucasus.

Vendors take responsibility for their products because customers can easily switch to another seller if quality declines. This personal accountability is a stark contrast to supermarkets, where unripe or spoiled fruits and vegetables often mix together in generic piles.

During the summer fruit season, I enjoyed some of the best cherries—comparable only to those I had in my childhood in Crimea. I stocked up on fruits, vegetables, and nuts for the week. Preparing meals was simple—just washing and chopping. At the time, I was busy launching a new startup, running my DJ school, and working in a studio, so this diet freed up time for my passions.

Morning runs were part of my routine. I woke up early, read, then ran and trained in Tagansky Park. My physical activity was consistent and rewarding.

By the end of summer, I was in excellent shape, well-rested, and felt great. A mostly raw diet brings a unique lightness—no heaviness after meals, no drowsiness, and no creative slump. It fosters a profound harmony between body and soul.

When I first arrived in Bali, I was amazed by the abundance of incredibly delicious seasonal fruits like mangoes, mangosteen, papaya, and rambutan—all affordable. Vegetables were less abundant but still accessible, allowing for fresh, vibrant salads made with local greens.

Bali’s hot and humid climate makes cooked or meat-heavy meals difficult to digest, especially during the day. Eating heavy food at night makes morning workouts harder. Here, I lead an active lifestyle, riding a motorbike, practicing boxing, and surfing. Any deviation from healthy eating or wellness routines is immediately noticeable.

In the noise of city life, we often lose touch with our bodies, fail to sense our heart’s rhythm, and miss the soul’s messages.

The urban environment suppresses these sensations, masking them behind the illusion of constant motion toward nowhere.

So, should someone from Russia trust the raw food advice of equatorial dwellers? Perhaps not blindly. You can always remain sedentary with a sour mood and declining health. But I always encourage trying it yourself.

While a fully raw diet may not suit everyone (feelings of guilt from dietary restrictions can be counterproductive), an 80% raw food approach is definitely worth considering. You can complement it with rice, buckwheat, tofu, or even noodles. The key is to avoid heavy daily consumption of cooked starches and practice food combining principles to ease digestion.

Just like anywhere, some residents in Bali eat poorly, get sick, or suffer food poisoning. The difference is that Bali offers more opportunities to enjoy perfectly tasty and nutritious fruits.

What should a city dweller do, especially in places with long winters and short summers? Ideally, move to a place with a better climate for your health.

I lived 17 years in Western Siberia, where the environment offers little health benefits apart from wild cranberries. Money can be earned anywhere—don't deceive yourself. If you choose to stay, learn about local flora, connect with farmers who personally grow their produce, and listen to your body.

Changing your diet is a gradual process. I stopped eating meat in 2010 and have slowly moved toward a more natural diet—avoiding other living creatures and limiting cooked or fried foods. For 25 years, I ate everything indiscriminately.

If it takes another 25 years to eat in harmony with myself and nature, I’m ready for it!

The results were alarming, but I’m grateful for the awareness it brought.
