The team from Guard Archaeology opened five closely packed cremation urns inside a single burial pit at the Twentyshilling Barrow. In total, cremated remains from at least eight people were recovered, dating to roughly between 1,439 and 1,287 BC.
The wind farm lies about three miles (roughly 4.8 kilometres) south of Sanquhar on open upland terrain.
To the north, a group of pits was also excavated, revealing late Neolithic activity dating from around 2,867 to 2,504 BC.
"The five urns in the Twentyshilling Barrow contained at least eight individuals," said lead archaeologist Thomas Muir. "The urns were deposited at the same time as they were packed tightly within the pit and date to the 15th–13th Century BC period."
"What is significant about the Twentyshilling remains is that they were cremated and buried almost immediately," he noted. This contrasts with Bronze Age practices in which bodies were often left out and later reused in later burials.
He added that this points to a serious event affecting the community—perhaps famine—that caused many deaths in a short period. The Bronze Age in this region may have faced particular stress, as other nearby burials show signs of famine and abandonment.
The excavation was part of planning requirements for the wind farm, which is now fully operational.
