Amazon Unveils Free AI Training Program in 2025 to Address Global AI Talent Shortage

Amazon launches the AI Ready program, offering free AI and generative AI courses to 2 million people worldwide by 2025, tackling the growing demand for skilled AI professionals amid a global talent shortage.

Essential Insights

  • Amazon introduces the AI Ready initiative to equip workers with vital AI skills amid an escalating global shortage of AI talent.
  • A recent study by Amazon Web Services and Access Partnership reveals that 73% of employers prioritize hiring AI-skilled professionals, yet 75% struggle to fill these roles.
  • Upskilling in AI can boost employee earnings by up to 47%, highlighting the high value of AI expertise in today's job market.

In response to the critical shortage of AI talent worldwide, Amazon (AMZN) has launched a comprehensive artificial intelligence skills training program aimed at empowering workers with essential AI competencies. This initiative, named "AI Ready," pledges to provide free AI education to 2 million individuals globally by 2025.

The demand for AI-skilled professionals is surging, with nearly three-quarters of employers prioritizing recruitment in this area. However, 75% of these companies report significant challenges in meeting their AI talent needs, according to a joint study by Amazon Web Services and the research organization Access Partnership. Furthermore, employers anticipate that employees who enhance their AI skills could see salary increases up to 47%.

Industry-wide, the shortage of qualified AI professionals remains a major hurdle. McKinsey highlights that this talent gap is a persistent barrier limiting growth across many advanced technology sectors, including AI.

Swami Sivasubramanian, AWS’s Vice President of Data and AI, emphasizes the importance of accessible AI education: "Unlocking AI’s full potential to solve the world’s toughest challenges requires making AI learning available to everyone eager to acquire these skills."

As part of the AI Ready program, Amazon offers eight free courses covering AI and generative AI technologies, along with scholarships for over 50,000 high school and university students. The program is developed in partnership with Code.org, a nonprofit dedicated to computer science education.

While Amazon strengthens its AI capabilities, other tech giants like Alphabet (Google), Microsoft, and Meta are also intensifying efforts in the AI domain. Amazon has further demonstrated its commitment by investing billions in Anthropic, a leading AI research company.

Amazon’s stock has responded positively, rising 0.7% recently and gaining 70% year-to-date, reflecting investor confidence in its AI initiatives.
