6 Words That Evolved Unexpected Meanings Over Time

Discover how common words have transformed their meanings through the years, reflecting language's natural evolution.

Before judging phrases like "she put on boots" or "please provide your signature here," consider that word meanings often shift over time.

Language is dynamic, and many words have expanded or changed their meanings. While not everyone keeps up with modern dictionaries, what was once considered incorrect may now be acceptable—often marked as "colloquial." Here are six such words that have evolved.

1. Nostalgia

Previously, nostalgia referred strictly to a longing for one's homeland. Today, it also encompasses a sentimental yearning for the past in general.

2. To Prevail

Historically, this word meant "to be sufficient or satisfy." Nowadays, it additionally means "to dominate or weigh heavily over someone or something."

For example, the phrase "to prevail over oneself" means relying solely on oneself for existence or growth.

3. Signature

Confusing "signature" with "autograph" used to be frowned upon. However, dictionaries now recognize an expanded meaning of "signature" as synonymous with "autograph."

After all, the verb "to sign" doesn't cause confusion, so insisting on "to autograph" is unnecessary.

4. Asexual

The primary definition is "not experiencing sexual attraction." Increasingly, it also describes a person perceived as unattractive or not eliciting sexual interest. Some dictionaries have added this nuance, though most still retain only the original meaning.

5. To Put On Footwear

Similar to the difference between "to dress someone" and "to put on clothes," where the former applies to people and the latter to garments, the verb "to put on boots" has been debated.

While "to wear boots" is recommended, dictionaries accept "to put boots on" as well.

6. Ecology

Many object to phrases like "poor ecology," since ecology traditionally means "the science of relationships between plants, animals, and their environment." However, dictionaries also define ecology as "the surrounding environment," which can indeed be poor.

Some dictionaries further include meanings related to "the harmony or cleanliness of something due to balanced components," validating expressions like "home ecology" or "ecological relationships."
