Mold is a type of fungus commonly found both indoors and outdoors. It reproduces by releasing microscopic spores that float through the air and settle on damp surfaces, where they grow and multiply.

Daily exposure to mold spores is normal, but for individuals with respiratory conditions or weakened immune defenses, inhaling these spores can lead to serious lung problems.

Among the many molds, species from the Aspergillus genus are the most commonly linked to lung infections and allergic reactions. Globally, about 2.5% of people with asthma develop mold allergies caused by Aspergillus.

This article dives into the symptoms mold causes in the lungs, how doctors diagnose these conditions, current treatment options, and prevention tips.

Can Mold Actually Grow in Your Lungs?

We are exposed to mold spores continuously, even outdoors. While most people experience no issues, those with compromised immune systems or chronic respiratory diseases may develop allergic reactions or infections when mold spores reach the lungs.

Aspergillus fumigatus is the leading culprit behind mold-related lung diseases, thriving in decaying plants and organic debris. Infection or allergy to this mold is called aspergillosis.

Other molds can also infect lungs, especially in vulnerable groups such as cancer patients or organ transplant recipients. These are classified as non-Aspergillus mold infections, accounting for 10-25% of such cases.

Understanding Mold and How It Spreads

Mold belongs to a diverse group of fungi that flourish wherever moisture and oxygen are present. Its spores are invisible to the naked eye, often smaller than 0.004 inches, and spread easily through the air.

Once spores land on damp materials like wood, soil, or decaying vegetation, they rapidly multiply, increasing exposure risks.

Types of Mold Affecting the Lungs in 2024

Most lung infections stem from Aspergillus molds, but other fungal groups also pose risks, especially following natural disasters or contaminated medical equipment.

Mucormycetes

The leading cause of non-Aspergillus mold infections, Mucormycetes infections vary by geography, with notable cases reported in countries like France and Switzerland.

Hyalohyphomycetes

These molds resemble Aspergillus microscopically and are found in soil, plants, and water. In the US and Europe, Fusarium species are the second most frequent non-Aspergillus mold infection source.

Phaeohyphomycetes

Characterized by dark pigmentation, this group includes over 100 fungi. They typically cause mild infections in immunocompromised patients but can occasionally result in severe illness.

Recognizing Symptoms of Mold in the Lungs

Symptoms depend on the mold type and individual response. Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) mimics asthma, causing coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, and sometimes fever.

Invasive aspergillosis involves fungal growth directly in lung tissue, with symptoms such as fever, chest pain, persistent cough, coughing blood, and severe breathing difficulties.

Non-Aspergillus infections present similarly. Mold can also form fungal balls (aspergillomas) in lungs, leading to tissue damage and symptoms like coughing blood and breathlessness.
