Xpeng, a prominent Chinese electric vehicle brand, is preparing to roll out its driver-assist technology across Europe by the close of 2024, although specific feature details remain under wraps.

Following reports from multiple media sources on Wednesday, Xpeng’s shares rose over 3.5% during midday trading on Thursday.

Brian Gu, honorary vice chairman and co-president of Xpeng’s board, noted that the company requires additional time to thoroughly test and customize its driver-assist software to meet European market standards.

A potential challenge includes the European Commission’s investigation into substantial state subsidies granted to Chinese EV manufacturers, which may skew pricing and affect local competitors. Gu stated that Xpeng is cooperating fully with this inquiry while adhering strictly to Europe’s GDPR data privacy regulations.

As a major rival to U.S. EV leader Tesla, Xpeng plans to extend its Navigation Guided Pilot system to 50 Chinese cities by the end of 2023. Currently, Xpeng’s driver-assist technology is available in Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Shanghai, and select expressways in Beijing.

Tesla’s Full Self-Driving Beta, designed for urban environments, has yet to receive regulatory approval for commercial use in China.

Xpeng’s Navigation Guided Pilot is accessible on certain vehicle models for a subscription fee, offering software-driven assistance for smoother driving tasks such as gentle braking at traffic signals, navigating intersections, and other urban maneuvers.

Over 90% of Xpeng owners in Beijing have opted to activate this feature, highlighting its growing importance, especially in the 2024 G9 SUV model.

In September, Xpeng’s vehicle deliveries rose to 15,310 units from 13,690 in August, while Tesla’s deliveries of Model 3 and Model Y in China declined by 12%, according to the China Passenger Car Association.
