Why You Shouldn't Always Focus on Your Weight

Are you sure you know your ideal weight? Do you chase it relentlessly and punish yourself with workouts and diets whenever the scale tips to the right? That might be a mistake!

Many people believe that the number on the scale is the sole objective and unbiased measure of physical fitness. We're here to tell you: scales can be misleading too.

For those who closely monitor their fitness, the scale often holds almost magical power. The moment it shifts even slightly to the right, they start punishing themselves with grueling workouts and strict dietary restrictions. But is it always necessary to take the scale's reading so seriously?

The story of Kelsey Wells, now a fitness star on Instagram*, shows that obsessing over scale numbers is not always the answer. Take a look at these three photos she took at different stages of her fitness journey.

In the first photo, Kelsey weighs about 145 pounds (66 kilograms). She isn’t overweight, but her physical condition leaves much to be desired. The middle photo shows the results of dieting: she lost over 22 pounds (10 kilograms). Finally, the photo on the right was taken after an intense training program called Bikini Body Guide. Kelsey returned to her original weight, but as you can see, these are very different pounds!

This clearly illustrates that you shouldn’t obsessively chase arbitrary numbers your mind has fixed on. If those numbers are disconnected from reality, even reaching your 'ideal' weight might not make you look your best.

Why You Shouldn't Always Focus on Your Weight

If I had only paid attention to the scale, I would have failed completely. My weight barely changed despite long and intense fitness sessions. However, I’ve learned to trust my eyes and feelings more, which tell me I’ve become much stronger, more attractive, and more enduring.

So don’t rush to join the scale-obsessed crowd. Sometimes, the scale deceives you. Trust your reflection in the mirror, listen to feedback from those around you, and pay attention to how your body feels.
