Wayne Rooney has described Tom Brady's comments questioning his commitment at Birmingham City as “very unfair.”

Rooney, who was dismissed by the club after just 83 days in January 2024, addressed the remarks on his upcoming podcast, The Wayne Rooney Show, set to launch on 15 August on INLIBER Sounds, YouTube and iPlayer.

Brady, a minority owner of Birmingham since August 2023, was filmed in a documentary expressing concerns about the head coach’s work ethic after a light training day in November 2023.

“I think Tom visited once, on a day when we were resting before a match, and he didn’t fully grasp football’s demands,” Rooney said. “Football isn’t the NFL – seasons last far longer and players need recovery. His judgment was unfair.”

Club Turmoil and Leadership Changes

Birmingham, taken over by Knighthead Capital Management in June 2023, appointed Rooney in October after replacing John Eustace. The team slumped to 20th place, and Rooney was replaced after 15 matches. Tony Mowbray’s brief return was cut short by illness, and the club endured seven managerial changes in its first 10 months under new ownership.

Rebuilding and Promotion

Rooney praised the club’s revival under current manager Chris Davies, noting the £30m investment in the squad and record-breaking League One campaign, where Birmingham secured promotion with 111 points.

“I respect Tom tremendously – he is one of the greatest athletes ever,” Rooney added. “The club seems to be on the right path now, clearing out and recruiting the players needed for success.”

Rooney insists Brady’s critique overlooked football’s unique demands and believes Birmingham’s recent investment and leadership changes have set the club on a positive course.
