In a strategic move, Japanese automotive giant Toyota has aligned with American automakers Ford and General Motors by adopting Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS). This decision allows Toyota’s battery electric vehicles (BEVs) to seamlessly connect to Tesla’s expansive charging network.
Toyota Motor North America announced that starting in 2025, its electric vehicles, including a forthcoming electric SUV, will be equipped with NACS connectors. This upgrade grants Toyota and Lexus owners access to approximately 12,000 Tesla Supercharger stations across North America, significantly enhancing charging convenience.
Through this collaboration, Toyota vehicles will tap into a vast network of around 84,000 charging ports continent-wide. Existing Toyota and Lexus owners with vehicles using the Combined Charging System (CCS) will receive adapters to enable compatibility with NACS chargers. While CCS has been a standard since 2011, NACS offers faster and more reliable charging, capable of bringing EV batteries from nearly empty to 80% charge within 20 to 30 minutes.
Toyota’s embrace of Tesla’s charging standard follows a growing industry trend, with major players like Ford, General Motors, and Hyundai also adopting NACS. This collective shift underscores Tesla’s dominant position in EV charging infrastructure.
