Taliban Dismisses Trump’s Proposal to Reclaim Bagram Airbase

A senior Taliban diplomat has ruled out any possibility of the United States regaining control of Bagram airbase in Afghanistan after former President Donald Trump said he wanted it back.

Zakir Jalal, from the Taliban’s foreign ministry, stated that all plans for a continued US military presence were categorically rejected during negotiations before the group’s return to power.

Trump had suggested at a UK press conference that the base, once the hub of NATO operations for nearly 20 years, could be retaken because "they need things from us" and pointed to its proximity to Chinese nuclear facilities.

In reality, the base was transferred to Afghan forces in July 2021 as part of the US withdrawal agreement signed in Doha in 2020, and no evidence supports claims of a new Chinese presence there.

China’s foreign ministry has affirmed respect for Afghanistan’s sovereignty, while the Taliban official reiterated that Afghans have never accepted foreign bases.

The Taliban insist that any US return to Bagram is off the table and that the future governance of Afghanistan rests with its people.
