Pope Francis Hosts Oil and Investment Leaders to Tackle Climate Crisis

Pope Francis, a vocal advocate on climate issues, will engage with top industry executives during a pivotal two-day Vatican summit.

On June 8th and 9th, Pope Francis will convene senior executives from the oil and investment sectors for an important two-day climate dialogue at the Vatican.

As reported by Axios and Bloomberg, this high-profile gathering will include leaders from BP, Equinor ASA—Norway's leading oil firm—and Exxon Mobil. Additionally, BlackRock CEO Larry Fink, known for his strong emphasis on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles in his shareholder communications, will participate.

The Vatican collaborated with the University of Notre Dame to organize this event. University spokesperson Paul Browne shared via email that Notre Dame's president encouraged departments to explore how they could support Pope Francis' encyclical Laudato si, or “On Care for Our Common Home,” which urges global responsibility for combating climate change and environmental harm. This initiative led to actions ranging from halting coal use at the university's power plant to hosting next week's oil conference in Rome.

A Profound Ethical Decision

The conference builds on the principles outlined in Pope Francis’s second encyclical, Laudato si. In May, the Pontiff issued guidance for investors, advocating that capital be channeled toward businesses operating under ethical standards that honor the dignity of every individual and embrace social responsibility.

While Pope Francis is the first modern Catholic leader to provide such direct commentary on global financial markets, the Vatican has long influenced cultural shifts impacting our collective future, explains Mary Brunson, vice president and co-founder of Investing for Catholics.

Previous pontiffs, including Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI, also addressed investors’ ethical duties. Pope John Paul II emphasized in his encyclical Centesimus Annus that investment choices inherently carry moral and cultural significance. Pope Benedict XVI highlighted the essential role of trust within markets in his final encyclical, Caritas in Veritate, calling for economic systems to be ethically structured and governed.

A Worldwide Call to Climate Action

This summit arrives at a critical juncture in global climate efforts. Following the U.S. announcement last June to exit the Paris Agreement—a landmark 2015 pact involving the Vatican and nations worldwide to curb temperature rise—business and social leaders have intensified efforts to reduce emissions through innovative, non-regulatory means. Meanwhile, state and local governments continue to endorse the accord.

Although the Vatican’s leadership in climate advocacy is widely welcomed, the extent of its influence remains uncertain. Nonetheless, Brunson affirms that the Vatican is asserting a key leadership role centered on human dignity. She notes, “The true impact of Pope Francis’s call to action may take decades to materialize, but the hope is for a lasting positive legacy.”
